Don Pitcher has written and photographed more than a dozen comprehensive travel guidebooks. Find them in local bookstores or online. His most recent title is Anchorage, Denali & the Kenai Peninsula, a detailed guide to Alaska's heartland. A brand new 6th edition of San Juan Islands will be available in early 2017.

Don Pitcher

Based in the end-of-the-road town of Homer, Alaska, photographer and author Don Pitcher has lived in Alaska for much of his adult life. He grew up on the East Coast and attended the University of California Berkeley before heading north to the Last Frontier.

Shortly after graduate school Don landed what seemed the coolest job on the planet: being flown around Alaska’s massive Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in a helicopter while conducting fire research. Wild places continued to beckon, and over the next 15 years he built backcountry trails, worked as a wilderness ranger, mapped grizzly habitat, and operated salmon weirs—anything to avoid an office job.

Don Pitcher is a highly regarded wedding and portrait photographer, but has also written or photographed many travel guidebooks. His photos have appeared in a multitude of publication and his fine art prints are sold in Alaska and Washington galleries, including Ptarmigan Arts in Homer.

Homer, Alaska

The small town of Homer, Alaska is a favorite destination for travelers, and a wonderful location for weddings and special events. Located 225 miles from Anchorage on the southwestern end of the Kenai Peninsula, Homer has a stunning location and an array of attractions.

The town is best known for its 4-mile-long spit that extends into Kachemak Bay. At its end is a busy harbor, fine restaurants, art galleries, and lodging places. Behind Homer, the hills rise sharply, making it possible to go from sea level to 1500 feet in a short drive.

Homer is an increasingly popular place for destination weddings--from small elopements to lavish affairs. Several outstanding wedding venues are available, including the one-of-a-kind mansion at Second Star, a gorgeous beachside lodge at Driftwood Inn, and Lands End Resort at the end of the Homer Spit. A multitude of bed and breakfasts and rental homes provide settings for more intimate weddings.

We would love to hear from you. Please let me know details of your upcoming wedding or other event.
